The History of the Faculty of Mathematical Engineering and Physical Engineering<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Faculty of Mathematical Engineering and Physical Engineering is one of the youngest faculties at the Polytechnic University of Tirana. Efforts to establish this faculty date back to October 4, 2004, with Rector Prof. Dr. P\u00ebrparim Hoxha issuing Order No. 83 Prot., titled \u201cEstablishment of the Working Group for the Reorganization of Departments under the Rectorate in line with the objectives of the University Reform according to the principles of the Bologna Process.\u201d \n\nThe working group consisted of members from departments under the Rectorate, specifically the Department of Mathematics and Informatics, the Department of Physics, and the Department of Chemistry. The group was led by Prof. Dr. Shp\u00ebtim Leka and included members such as Prof. Dr. Lumturi Kapllani, Prof. Dr. Tatjana Mulaj, Prof. Asoc. Engj\u00ebllushe Luzi, Prof. Dr. Shp\u00ebtim Shehu, Prof. Dr. Lulzim Hanelli, and Prof. Asoc. Petrit Berhami.\n\nDrawing on the experience of polytechnic universities worldwide, particularly the Polytechnic Universities of Milan and Turin, the group proposed the introduction of two new interdisciplinary degrees: Mathematical Engineering under the Department of Mathematics and Informatics, and Physical Engineering under the Department of Physics.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This proposal was approved by the Senate of the Polytechnic University of Tirana (UPT) through Decision No. 17, dated May 4, 2005. It was subsequently endorsed by the Minister of Education and Science, Mr. Luan Memushi, via official documents No. 5354 Prot. and 5355, dated August 22, 2005.<\/p>\n

Thus, in the academic year 2005-2006, the following programs commenced for the first time respectively at:<\/p>\n

- The Department of Mathematics and Informatics, with 32 internal and 26 external lecturers, launched the First Cycle Study Program, a 3-year program in Mathematical Engineering, enrolling 31 students.<\/p>\n

- The Department of Physics, with 16 internal and 32 external lecturers, launched the First Cycle Study Program, a 3-year program in Physical Engineering, enrolling 30 students.<\/p>\n

In alignment with UPT's strategy, which encompasses teaching, scientific research, service provision, and meeting the needs of UPT students, as well as within the framework of implementing the Bologna Declaration, alongside preparations aimed at contemporary reorganizations of curricula, the reorganization of UPT's faculties was also deemed essential.<\/p>\n

In 2006, the expanded working group, now including the heads of the faculties of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Geology-Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, as well as the UPT chancellor, proposed:<\/p>\n

The establishment of the Faculty of Mathematical Engineering and Physical Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Tirana.<\/p>\n

With the mission:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Preparing high-quality engineers in these two fields, capable of integrating into the specific job market (both domestic and international).<\/li>\n
  • Covering the teaching load in all mathematical and physical disciplines for the Polytechnic University.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    This proposal was approved by the Senate of UPT, with Decision No. 6, dated 03.03.2006.<\/p>\n

    In Decision No. 824 of the Council of Ministers, dated 05.12.2007, \"On the Establishment of Some Core Units, Faculties at the Polytechnic University of Tirana,\" the establishment of the Faculty of General Education is approved as an associated faculty, comprising the following:<\/p>\n

    Department of Physics and Chemistry; Department of Mathematics, as well as the Center for Foreign Languages,\u00a0considering the diplomas in Mathematical Engineering and Physical Engineering as interdisciplinary diplomas.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The first Dean of this Faculty is appointed as Prof. Dr. Tatjana MULAJ.<\/p>\n

    The naming and status of the Faculty of General Education did not align with the vision of the working group and the mission for which the Faculty of Mathematical Engineering and Physical Engineering was proposed to be established.<\/p>\n

    The Dean's office, the Council, and the academic staff of the Faculty, supported by students and the Rectorate of the UPT, during the period from January 2008 to April 2009, through official letters and continuous meetings even at the highest state levels, argued that the Faculty of General Education (FFP), as an associated faculty, was unable to fulfill its mission of preparing quality engineers in the fields of mathematical engineering and physical engineering, capable of integrating into the specific job market (both internal and external). They requested:<\/p>\n

    To change the status and name of the Faculty of General Education.<\/p>\n

    The persistent, ongoing, and well-argued efforts of the Dean, Council, and academic staff of the Faculty were crowned with the issuance of Decision No. 345 of the Council of Ministers, dated April 8, 2009, which approves the\u2026 The creation of the Faculty of Engineering in Mathematical and Physical Engineering,<\/strong>, which consists of:<\/p>\n

    i. The Department of Mathematical Engineering;<\/p>\n

    ii. The Department of Physical Engineering;<\/p>\n

    iii. The Department of Chemistry;<\/p>\n

    iv. The Center of Foreign Languages.<\/p>\n

    with two diplomas in Mathematical Engineering and Physical Engineering.<\/p>\n

    The Dean of the Faculty of Mathematical Engineering and Physical Engineering is elected Prof. Dr. Shp\u00ebtim LEKA.<\/p>\n

    The academic staff of FIMIF, drawing on the experience of Polytechnic universities from other countries, particularly from the Polytechnic University of Milan and Torino, as well as the experience and qualifications of its members, has been engaged over the years in fulfilling the mission of this faculty to prepare quality engineers in both fields of Mathematical Engineering and Physical Engineering, capable of integrating into the specific labor market.<\/p>\n

    To achieve this mission, deepening the knowledge acquired in the first cycle was essential through the Master's and Doctorate programs. These programs aimed to prepare quality engineers with an interdisciplinary background, capable of addressing problems that utilize methodologies and tools offered by various sectors of Applied Mathematics, as well as being ready to tackle the introduction of new and complex technologies, utilizing engineering methodologies offered by different sectors of Applied Physics.<\/p>\n

    According to the Decision of the Council of Ministers (VKM) No. 910, dated August 26, 2009, \"For the opening of the Second Cycle Study Programs at the Polytechnic University of Tirana,\" the journey of the Second Cycle Study Programs began in the academic year 2009-2010.<\/p>\n

      \n
    • The Master of Sciences in Mathematical Engineering, with 21 students<\/li>\n
    • Master of Sciences in Physical Engineering, with 18 students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      According to the Order of the Minister of Education and Science, Mr. Myqerem Tafaj, No. 605, dated December 29, 2010, the Third Cycle Study Programs began in the academic year 2010-2011, designed according to Law No. 9741, dated May 21, 2007 \"On Higher Education in the Republic of Albania,\" as amended.<\/p>\n

        \n
      • PhD in Mathematical Engineering (in two directions: Numerical Analysis and Differential Equations \/ Operations Research and Statistics), with 17 students.<\/li>\n
      • PhD in Physical Engineering (in two directions: Applied Optics \/ Materials Physics), with 11 students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        The third cycle studies aimed at further scientific preparation in the fields of Numerical Analysis and Differential Equations, Operations Research and Statistics, as well as in the fields of Applied Optics and Materials Physics.<\/p>\n

        Considering the new needs of the labor market and the shortage of professionals capable of dealing with contemporary concepts, as well as solving problems related, among other things, to the management of complex systems; clinical treatments and the quality control of medical equipment; the analysis of the financial consequences of risk, through mathematics, statistics, and financial theories, the programs for the Second Cycle Professional Master's Studies were developed in:<\/p>\n

        • Mathematical Engineering in System Analysis<\/li>\n
        • Physical Engineering in Medicine<\/li>\n
        • Mathematical Engineering in Actuarial Science Profile<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Based on the Order of the Minister of Education and Science, Mr. Myqerem Tafaj, No. 597, dated 09.12.2011, \"For the opening of the Second Cycle Professional Master's Study Programs at the Polytechnic University of Tirana,\" in the academic year 2012-2013, the Second Cycle Study Programs were launched, designed in accordance with Law No. 9741, dated 21.5.2007, \"On Higher Education in the Republic of Albania,\" as amended.<\/p>\n

          • Professional Master's in Mathematical Engineering in System Analysis with 14 students.<\/li>\n
          • Professional Master's in Physical Engineering in Medicine with 12 students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            In the academic year 2015-2016, in implementation of the Order of the Minister of Education and Sports, Mrs. Lindita Nikolla, No. 274, dated 20.07.2015, \"For the opening of the Second Cycle Professional Master's Study Program in Mathematical Engineering with an Actuarial Science Profile, at the Polytechnic University of Tirana,\" the Second Cycle Study Program began.<\/p>\n

            • Professional Master's in Mathematical Engineering with an Actuarial Science Profile, with 28 students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Based on the Order of the Minister of Education and Science, Mrs. Evis Kushi, No. 334, dated 04.07.2023, \"For the opening of the First Cycle 'Bachelor' Study Programs in Chemical Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Tirana,\" in the academic year 2023-2024, the First Cycle Study Program began, designed in accordance with Law No. 80\/2015, dated 22.07.2015, \"On Higher Education and Scientific Research in Higher Education Institutions in the Republic of Albania.\"<\/p>\n

              • \"Bachelor\" in Chemical Engineering.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                During these years, the academic staff has worked diligently to transmit high-quality and contemporary information to students in all educational disciplines and subjects with a strong practical character, implementing the cycle of information-knowledge-skills.<\/p>\n

                In addition to teaching, one of the important dimensions at FIMIF is scientific research, in accordance with the philosophy and mission of UPT, and aligned with the interests of the university, academic staff, and students. The main aim of scientific research activity has been and remains the continuous improvement of the content of the educational process, as well as the ongoing enhancement of academic standards at FIMIF. Based on the objectives and goals of scientific research activity, and the principle of freedom in conducting scientific research and academic teaching, the academic staff at FIMIF has carried out systematic research work for the exploration and development of new knowledge, as well as its practical application. Attention has also been given to the transfer of knowledge through the publication of results in scientific journals and participation in national and international conferences. The publication of research results in scientific journals and participation in national and international conferences, valued by the academic staff as a means of stimulating scientific debate not only within the faculty's academic community but also within the Albanian and international communities, has been accompanied by a significant number of quality presentations and publications, influencing the continuous scientific qualification of the academic staff.<\/p>\n

                The teaching and research activities at the faculty have been carried out through collaboration with higher education institutions both within and outside the country, with other state institutions, professional organizations, and the business community, as well as through national and international projects.<\/p>\n

                Today, the academic staff of the faculty consists of 40 members<\/strong> belonging to the category of Professors (with academic titles of Professor, Associate Professor), 23 members<\/strong> of the category of Lecturers (with a Doctoral degree), and 7 members<\/strong> of the category of Assistant \u2013 Lecturer<\/strong> (with a Master's degree in Sciences).<\/p>\n
